Synthetic Brucella Antigens
APHA Scientific has developed a portfolio of synthetic oligosaccharide antigens for use in Brucella serological assays. Developed in collaboration with the University of Alberta, these chemically defined antigens have been designed to replicate diagnostically important structures found on Brucella bacteria while offering a safe alternative to conventionally produced biological antigens.

Innovation in Brucella Diagnostics
The synthetic antigen portfolio builds upon APHA’s expertise in brucellosis research, surveillance and diagnostic testing. By using precise synthetic chemistry, these antigens deliver consistent composition and performance, helping to overcome some of the limitations associated with traditional antigen production.
APHA is internationally recognised for its expertise in brucellosis research and diagnostics. Our synthetic antigen portfolio combines leading scientific research with practical diagnostic knowledge, delivering innovative tools to support animal health laboratories, researchers and diagnostic developers worldwide.
Available Synthetic Antigens
M Disaccharide: Designed to maximise diagnostic specificity while reducing false positive serological reactions.
M Tetrasaccharide: A synthetic antigen that has demonstrated strong diagnostic performance, supporting both sensitivity and specificity.
tA Trisaccharide: Provides broad antibody recognition and may be used independently or in combination with M antigens to enhance diagnostic coverage.
Synthetic Brucella Antigens are not currently available as standard catalogue products. For information on availability, collaborative opportunities, research applications or commercial licensing, please contact the APHA Scientific team.
Why switch to synthetic antigens?
Conventional Brucella serology relies on biologically derived antigens. These synthetic antigens provide a precisely defined safe (non-infectious) alternative, designed to improve specificity, reduce false positive reactions and deliver consistent batch-to-batch performance, while supporting future advances in diagnostic testing.
WOAH-recognised approach:
The use of synthetic antigens for Brucella serology is recognised within the WOAH Manual for Terrestrial Animals (Chapter 3.1.4 Brucellosis)
