Supporting laboratory validation with pathology control blocks

APHA Scientific is now able to provide formalin-fixed paraffin wax-embedded (FFPE) control blocks for use in laboratory testing and method validation. This development builds on existing pathology and bio-imaging capabilities, offering customers access to high-quality control materials derived from archived tissue samples.

The primary control blocks currently available support Ziehl Neelsen staining for the identification of acid fast bacilli (AFBs), including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in FFPE tissue. Each block is supplied with a pre-stained slide using the cold Ziehl Neelsen method, confirming the presence of AFBs.

These materials are designed to support a range of laboratory activities, including method validation, staff training, competency assessment and ongoing quality control. They are particularly valuable in situations where suitable AFB-positive material can be difficult to obtain.

The introduction of pathology control blocks reflects APHA Scientific’s specialist expertise and access to diverse tissue material, enabling the provision of reliable and traceable control resources to support laboratory testing.

In addition to AFB-positive material, APHA Scientific may be able to provide further FFPE control blocks depending on specific requirements, including material to support specialised or less commonly available testing.

Laboratories interested in exploring available materials are encouraged to get in touch to discuss requirements or request further information.
