Pathology Control Blocks
APHA Scientific is uniquely positioned, with specialist pathology expertise and access to diverse tissue material, to produce formalin-fixed paraffin wax-embedded (FFPE) wax blocks. These blocks can be used as control material to support the validation, quality assurance and assess reliability of laboratory testing.
Our pathology control blocks support a range of validation, training and quality assurance applications.

Our pathology control blocks support a range of validation, training and quality assurance applications.
The primary wax blocks we supply support Ziehl Neelsen staining for the identification of acid fast bacilli (AFBs), such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in FFPE tissues. Each FFPE block is supplied with a pre-stained slide (cold Ziehl Neelsen method) demonstrating confirmed AFB presence.
These control blocks are used by histopathology laboratories, including NHS services, to support method validation, staff training, competency assessment, and ongoing quality control, particularly where suitable AFB-positive material is difficult to obtain.
Additional Control Materials
Our expertise and available material extends beyond AFB control material. We may be able to provide additional FFPE control blocks depending on specific requirements, including material to support specialised or less commonly available testing.
